Oh pi, you are a witty one

It’s day two of π week here at The Messy Middle (if you missed Day One you can find it here — check out the good pi tunes). While most of the world will keep their π joy to a mere day, π (or Pi) has more to offer than can be contained in one post. Between the songs, cartoons, jokes, T-shirts, and poetry, there’s a lot of π love going on!

I’m having a subscription drive and if  31.4 people subscribe by Friday night (China time), anyone who has left a comment this week will win the chance to have a delicious pie sent to anyone of their choice in the US. No it’s not tacky to choose yourself  :)

Now, on to the fun of the day … witty cartoons!

pi-pie-3.14-mind-blown-LOL

Mind blown indeed! It’s kind of like the mid-80s when you could supposedly get a message from the devil if you played a record backwards … only SO. MUCH. BETTER. Or when you’d be bored in math class and punch in 0.7734 spelling hello to your friend and wait for the teacher not to be looking so you could flash your calculator at said friend. Or when you’d cuss saying “there’s going to be 7734 to pay!” OK, maybe no one else did these things. Did I mention I’ve been a math geek for a while?

chickenpi

Did anyone else mistake Pi for a turkey at first glance?

What? No. OK, moving on.

apple pi

I guess you can’t really make a cartoon of carving pi out of French silk and expect anyone to get it :).

I’m putting together a Pi lesson for class on Friday and I’m thinking this one will take some explaining. {And yes, I’m going to make the write pi-ku and will share some on Saturday when I announce the winner.}

Thank you thank you for getting the word out on the subscription drive. I couldn’t do it without you. We’re over 15% of the way to the subscription goal.  Remember you can sign up for either the newsletter (and get a free book!) or this blog — either way, look up to the right at the home page of The Messy Middle and just enter your email address.

Which cartoon did you like the best? Leave a comment and be entered in the drawing! And happy pi week everyone :)  Amy

Comments

  1. the turkey, no question.

  2. Debbie Marshall says:

I did identify with the chickenPi chicken. Being an extrovert, I also tend to go on and on. haha :) thanks Amy

  3. Nita Kulesa says:

Well, it was a toss up between the chickens in the bar and the pi/pie. However, I must vote for the pi/pie because I had to look again before I got it! Hope you’re well!

  4. I loved little Pi getting called by his full name!

  5. I like the mirror image of 3.14 one. :)

  6. As much as I groan ( with love) at the cartoons ( remember I am NOT a math geek), I will have to say I prefer the Apple/Pi one. As I read your emails this week, I can recall the look of joy on your face ( from Beijing) when you talk about Pi and that to me is what is all about. Have a great Pi week!

  7. Mind Blown is my favorite. I’m going to show it to my students Thursday. I loved these!

  8. By far the 3.14 backwards is pie. I felt exactly like the cartoon-being with my mouth wide open.
I also wrote “hello” on my calculator to people. Or to myself, really :)

  9. I saw a turkey
    before I saw a π .
I am not a math geek,
so I vote for the apple π.

    Looking forward to …jokes tomorrow!

  10. I saw a turkey too and that one’s my favorite. Once I got it, I honestly started laughing …

  11. Mind Blown is my favorite. How could I never have seen that before? That’s Pi-erific!

  12. Becky Amundson says:

I SO did those calculator messages!

  13. MIND BLOWN! That was my favorite FOR SURE.

A note about my family: I am SO proud that Basil was born on Pi day. he was born at lunch time, but how awesome would it have been if he was born March 14 at 1:59?!?

The upside down calculator was one of my favorite ways to show words. Remember pagers/beepers? Ever try to send your friend a message where the numbers make no sense and then BAM! you turn it upside down and the simple 530453080 becomes “Oboe Shoes”? Or 50538 becomes “Besos”? (kisses in Spanish)

    *sigh of joy*

  14. Those cartoons were great! However, if I were to create my own, it’d probably end up being “pithetic.”

  15. Mark Allman says:

All of the cartoons were great. I have always been intrigued by the Golden Ratio or Phi. Math is fascinating and few realize how closely tied it is to almost everything including music.

  16. When I taught high school math I’d celebrate “Pi Day” by letting kids bring in a pie to share during class. We’d also build “towers” using toothpicks and mini-marshmallows. The point was to learn (or prove!) by trial and error that the triangle is the strongest support shape/structure…over rectangles and squares… that sagged. Loved the cartoons…I shared with several peeps. Amazing math… :)

  17. Katherine says:

Like Nita, I had to look at the pi/pie cartoon a 2nd time before I got it. That is the one I choose.
