Personality

Dabbling and Decisions: Which style are you?

Last week I learned something new about myself. I am not a  dabbler. I had dinner Saturday night with the friend who helped me set up my  blog (and had been either encouraging or harassing me to do it for months, you  be the judge). I mentioned that I was excited and a bit scared to have started  the blog because the way I roll is that once I start something, I’m all in. And she casually responded, “So, you’re not a dabbler.”

As I have reflected on that comment, it turns out that I am in fact not a dabbler. Not that I don’t try new things or discard things I’m not interested in any more, I do. But as I look at the way I approach things, I’m not one to try this or that. When I do something I tend to be all in. I will root for the Broncos whether they win or lose. I cannot imagine having loyalties to anyone outside of KU and my beloved Jayhawks. This year I set a goal for how many books I want to read in the calendar year, and by gum I am going to hit my  number. I repeat. I AM GOING TO HIT MY NUMBER. Even if it means reading a few  shorter books just to help me along. I am on target and you know why, it turns out I’m not a dabbler.

I don’t think this carries any particular value or that I’m better than dabblers. I’m just not one and I didn’t know it. How about you? Do you dabble?
